Our Top 5 Tips for Winter Driving

Winter is no time to take risks on the road, since getting stranded could have significant implications. Even if you have the assurance of roadside assistance, it can take them much longer to get to your location -- especially if road conditions are hazardous. Because of that, we wanted to offer a few tips to help you stay safe as you motor through the season.

  • First and foremost, get your car serviced regularly -- and make sure to have it thoroughly checked out before you take off on a long road trip. Not sure of what needs to be looked at? That's where the expert technicians in our Mopar Service Center are ready to help, since they know your Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge or Ram vehicle inside and out.
  • Before you set out in your car, make sure to walk around it and clear snow, ice or dirt from your windshield, all windows, headlights, taillights, sensors and turn signals.
  • If you're not experienced with driving in wintry conditions, set aside time to practice in an empty snow-covered or icy parking lot -- or even a side road that isn't busy. The last thing you want to do is set forth and encounter unfamiliar conditions in stressful rush hour traffic.
  • If you're driving someone else's car, or a rental, make sure to familiarize yourself with the vehicle before you drive away. Review the owner's manual to prepare yourself for any situations that may come up, and make sure you know exactly where the hazard lights switch is located.
  • Finally, make sure that you're driving a vehicle that's suited to the conditions. All-wheel drive-equipped vehicles offer better control and traction in bad weather, and SUVs and pickups usually fare much better on snow-covered roads thanks to their higher ground clearance. We recommend you consider any of our Jeep models -- such as the Cherokee, Wrangler or Grand Cherokee --or Ram trucks, as well as the Dodge Durango and Journey SUVs.
